Archaeological interest in the Shatby area dates back to the last quarter of the 19th century. However, more scientific investigations in the area began by the turn to the 20th century, when Giuseppe Botti, the first director of the Graeco-Roman Museum, began exploring it. Botti’s death in October 1903 interrupted the investigations, but Evaristo Breccia continued them. From 1904 to 1910, Breccia systematically excavated the Shatby necropolis, uncovering hundreds of burials and funerary monuments, including impressive underground multi chambered structures.

The west burial chamber suffered as the rest of the necropolis from water, dump and debris. However, traces of colors are still visible, notably the deep red color once covering the walls surface, while during 2022, the skull of a woman and the complete skeleton of another female were found. Even though the skeleton is inside a loculi where the visitor cannot enter, the virtual model of the necropolis provides access to such an inaccessible location.

The periodical concentration of water has contributed to the appearance of intense dampness, which has seriously harmed among other things its elaborate painted decoration and texts (the names of the last occupants). The two photos show the east burial unity, including the Klinai Chamber upon its discovery in the 1910s and the situation during the 2020s. Despite the burden on the space from a large amount of water and soil, some colours are still visible on the walls. The digital documentation of the site contributed to its study and monitoring.

The long-term abandonment allowed the formation of a new strata of external sand, ca. 50 cm deep, which has covered the surface of the open-air court and the covered areas of the complex. Hence, the ‘north façade’ of the tomb is no longer visible, while neither of the two chambers is accessible unless one is bent to the knees. Under such conditions, rainwater is occasionally concentrated on top of the sandy surface, making the whole site completely inaccessible. The photo shows the situation of the north corridor, the north vestibule and the aule during the 2020s.

All underground structures were eventually reburied under a thick layer of water, dump and debris, with irrevocable consequences for the fragile monument. Here is the Philoteknos hall (Rοοm e) upon its discovery in the 1910s by Breccia, and its situation in the 2020s.

In 2019, the Archaeological Society of Alexandria initiated a multifaceted project for the complete revisiting of the site. One of the project’s objectives was the digital documentation of the necropolis with 3D approaches (digital scanning and photogrammetry). Such a study provides an invaluable record that allows:

The creation of an accurate 3D and 2D documentation of the site.

The virtual access to inaccessible locations.

The creation of an interactive virtual tour.

The documentation of the state of preservation of the site and the effects of climate change and the surrounding environment.

Unfortunately, in the period following the discovery, the site met its gradual deterioration, being exposed to weather conditions as well as to infiltrating water from the underground. In addition, significant concentrations of soil, which were left all around the place after the excavation, would turn into invading mud by rain waters.
